What exactly is cosmetic ultrasound?
Ultrasound refers to high frequencies above the human hearing range. Ultrasonic waves occur naturally in the animal kingdom and, artificially generated, are used today in medicine, industry, aerospace, physics, chemistry and many other fields, including cosmetics.
In cosmetics, an ultrasound device is used that generates high frequencies only within a limited spectrum. These are inaudible but can act directly on the skin when a contact gel is used. Cosmetic ultrasound treatments often use a gel with hyaluronic acid, which the ultrasound transports deep into the lower layers of the skin. This happens because the sound waves, with up to 2 million vibrations per second, not only move the tissue mechanically but also warm it thermally.
Cosmetic ultrasound treatments benefit from both the thermal and the mechanical effect. The ultrasonic waves make the upper and lower tissue layers vibrate, and the warmth improves blood circulation. Usually, ultrasound devices are used that allow different techniques, from micro-massage and heat treatment to phonophoresis for infusing active ingredients. The chosen frequency, intensity and type of sound depend on the desired application.
What does a cosmetic ultrasound treatment feel like?
Cosmetic ultrasound devices work similarly to medical ultrasound devices but use a less pronounced spectrum. During the treatment, the transducer of the device, which emits the ultrasonic waves, is moved evenly and slowly over the skin areas to be treated on the face or body. While you relax, the ultrasound gently develops its effect. The thermal effect described above feels similar to a heat patch. The mechanical vibrations, on the other hand, feel like a very light massage, which is very pleasant.
What effects does cosmetic ultrasound have?
The pressure of the transducer, the heat generated and the vibrations successfully influence the tissue:
- Blood circulation in the skin can be stimulated.
- The movement of the tissue can release self-healing effects.
- The vibrations give the skin elasticity.
- The pores of the skin are opened.
- Thanks to the open pores and the vibrations, active ingredients penetrate better.
- Collagen and elastin fibres can be activated.
- Inflammatory processes can be reduced.
- Redness and visible blood vessels can be minimised.
- Microcirculation and lymph flow can be stimulated.
