The Plasma Pen works by generating high-frequency electrical discharges that can vaporise the top layer of the skin and tighten the underlying tissue. The plasma spark creates a kind of electromagnetic energy that is able to vaporise tissue without damaging it. This stimulates collagen production and the skin becomes firmer and smoother.
The Plasma Pen has many applications, ranging from the treatment of wrinkles, sagging skin, scars, pigmentation spots and selected cosmetic skin irregularities to a visual refinement of the complexion. The Plasma Pen can also be used for non-surgical eyelid tightening, but only in selected cases of minor severity.
Which areas can the Plasma Pen be used for?
In plastic surgery, the Plasma Pen is used primarily for the non-invasive removal of skin appendages as well as for skin tightening and wrinkle treatment. However, it can also be used for other purposes, for example:
Skin tightening and wrinkle treatment on the face
The Plasma Pen can be used for sagging skin, wrinkles, crow’s feet and other signs of ageing on the face to make the skin look firmer and younger.
Removal of pigmentation spots
The Plasma Pen can also be used to remove pigmentation spots, sun spots and other skin discolourations.
Removal of warts and skin lesions
The Plasma Pen can also be used to remove warts, age warts and other skin lesions such as moles.
Scar treatment
The Plasma Pen can be used to treat acne scars, surgical scars and other scars.
Eyelid tightening
The Plasma Pen can also be used for non-surgical eyelid tightening in selected cases.
When is a Plasma Pen treatment not suitable?
Although the Plasma Pen is a versatile tool in aesthetic medicine, there are certain situations in which its use is not indicated or should be approached with caution. These include:
Pregnancy
It is recommended not to carry out Plasma Pen treatments during pregnancy, as the effects of the treatment on the unborn child are unknown.
Acute skin inflammation
In the case of acute skin inflammation, such as active acne or eczema, a Plasma Pen treatment should be avoided. The treatment can worsen the inflammation and lead to further complications.
Skin diseases
In certain skin diseases such as psoriasis or rosacea, treatment with a Plasma Pen may be contraindicated or must be carried out with caution.
Blood clotting disorders
In patients with blood clotting disorders, a Plasma Pen treatment should be avoided, as it may increase the risk of bleeding.
Immunosuppression
In patients with immunosuppression, e.g. due to chemotherapy or HIV, a Plasma Pen treatment should be carried out with caution, as the immune system may not be able to fight off infections.
